A toxicological review procedure has been developed and incorporated into NSF/ANSI Standard 50. This evaluation procedure incorporates exposure assessment methodology from the U.S. EPA as well as health effects assessment procedures used in drinking water standards (NSF/ANSI Standard 60 and 61). The Standard is focused in the area of health effects parameters, including oral, inhalation and dermal exposure. Gaining an understanding of the new toxicological review procedure is important for industry, users and regulators as it is anticipated that the current requirements NSF/ANSI Standard 50 will eventually be incorporated into state regulations.
